What is the stained glass (for BIPV) ?

Dec 08, 2025

Stained glass (for BIPV) is a new type of glass material that combines solar power generation functions with architectural aesthetics and is an important application achievement of building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) technology.
1. Definition and Principle
Stained glass (for BIPV) is made by forming a colored film or coating on the surface of the glass through a special process, which enables it to not only absorb solar energy and convert it into electrical energy, but also present different colors and appearance effects.
2. Manufacturing process
A. Coating process: A compound process based on inorganic binders, inorganic pigments and water-based resins, using water-based solvents as the dispersion medium, and adopting the dispersion encapsulation technology, a dense glass-pigment coating is constructed on the glass surface through the screen printing process.
B. Coating process: Some colored crystalline silicon power generation glasses adopt a special coating process, which can completely hide the crystalline silicon solar cells while ensuring high light transmittance and power generation efficiency.
C. Pattern structure process: By setting trapezoidal and other pattern structures on the surface of the glass body and regularly arranging color layers and light-transmitting layers on them, the light transmittance of the glass can be increased while meeting the color requirements.
