Cadmium telluride (CdTe) thin film modules are an important photovoltaic technology, occupying an important position in the solar energy field with its low cost, high efficiency and suitability for large-scale production.
1. Basic structure
A. Material composition: CdTe and CdS form a heterojunction, deposited on glass or flexible substrates.
B. Structural layers:
a. Transparent conductive oxide (TCO): such as zinc tin oxide (ZTO) or fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO), as the front electrode.
b. CdS window layer: N-type semiconductor, forming a P-N junction with P-type CdTe.
c. CdTe absorption layer: core light absorption material, only 2-10 microns thick.
d. Back electrode: usually metal or carbon paste, which needs to be chemically etched to form an ohmic contact.
2. Working principle
Photons are absorbed by CdTe through TCO and CdS, generating electron-hole pairs, which are separated under the built-in electric field to form current.
3. Core advantages
A. Low cost:
a. Low material consumption (extremely thin CdTe layer), fast preparation process and low energy consumption.
b. Low cost of large-scale production, 10-20% lower than crystalline silicon modules.
B. Low light performance: CdTe band gap is close to the ideal value, and the power generation efficiency decreases less under weak light conditions such as rainy and cloudy weather, morning and dusk.
C. Low temperature coefficient: -0.25%/°C (about -0.45%/°C for crystalline silicon), more stable output under high temperature environment.
D. Environmental protection potential: Although it contains cadmium, closed-loop production can recycle more than 99% of cadmium, and there is no emission in the power generation process. The cadmium emission over the entire life cycle is only 0.1% of that of coal-fired power plants.
