The main application scenarios and classification of photovoltaic glass

Jul 18, 2025

Photovoltaic glass, as a specially designed glass material, is mainly applied in the field of solar power generation, and its core function is to convert solar energy into electrical energy. The following are the main application scenarios and specific classifications of photovoltaic glass:

Centralized photovoltaic power station

A. Large ground-mounted power stations:

Installed in open areas such as deserts and plains, large-sized photovoltaic glass modules are used, aiming for high efficiency and low cost.

B. Agrivoltaic/Fishery-voltaic:

The combination of photovoltaic glass with agriculture or fishery enables the composite utilization of land.

2. Distributed photovoltaic systems

A. Industrial and commercial roofs:

Installing photovoltaic glass on the rooftops of factories, warehouses and other buildings can reduce the electricity costs of enterprises and achieve green energy.

B. Residential rooftop photovoltaic:

Household photovoltaic systems (such as BIPV or ordinary modules) usually adopt glass with good light transmission to meet aesthetic requirements.

C. Carport/charging pile roof:

It has both shading and power generation functions and is commonly found in parking lots or charging stations for new energy vehicles.

3. Building-integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV)

A. Photovoltaic curtain wall

Instead of traditional building curtain walls, transparent or semi-transparent photovoltaic glass (such as cadmium telluride film) is used to balance lighting and power generation.

B. Photovoltaic roof

It can be directly used as a roofing material (such as Tesla Solar Roof) to replace tiles or color steel tiles.

C. Photovoltaic skylights/sunshades

It is used in public buildings such as shopping malls and stations to regulate light and generate electricity at the same time.

4. Transportation and Infrastructure

A. Photovoltaic Road

Experimental project: Embedding high-strength photovoltaic glass into the road surface to charge street lamps or electric vehicles.

B. Soundproof wall/guardrail:

The sound insulation barrier beside the expressway integrates photovoltaic glass to generate additional electricity.

C. Bus stops/shelters:

Photovoltaic glass is installed on the top to power the lighting or advertising screen.

5. Off-grid and Special scenarios

A. Power Supply in Remote areas:

Provide an independent power system for areas without grid coverage (such as mountainous regions and islands).

B. Portable devices:

Foldable photovoltaic glass is used for mobile power demands in camping, military and other fields.

C. Space Applications:

Satellites or space stations use highly efficient radiation-resistant photovoltaic glass (such as multi-junction gallium arsenide).

6. Other innovative applications

A. Photovoltaic greenhouse

The top of agricultural greenhouses is made of photovoltaic glass with a specific light transmittance to balance crop growth and power generation.

B. Floating Photovoltaic

Floating photovoltaic power stations (such as those in reservoirs and lakes) utilize the reflected light from the water surface to enhance power generation efficiency.
